The last 10 winners of the Spanish Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber, Spanish Grand Prix 2011

With just under 11 days until the next grand prix at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain, I thought I’d have a quick look at the last ten winners of the Spanish Grand Prix.

Since 2002, only 4 different teams have won the race with 7 different drivers crossing the finish line in first.

Year Driver Constructor Engine
2011 VETTEL Red Bull Renault
2010 WEBBER Red Bull Renault
2009 BUTTON Brawn GP Mercedes
2008 RAIKKONEN Ferrari Ferrari
2007 MASSA Ferrari Ferrari
2006 ALONSO Renault Renault
2005 RAIKKONEN McLaren Mercedes
2004 M.SCHUMACHER Ferrari Ferrari
2003 M.SCHUMACHER Ferrari Ferrari
2002 M.SCHUMACHER Ferrari Ferrari

With a resurgent Red Bull grabbing their first win of 2012 with Sebastian Vettel in Bahrain, you wouldn’t bet against the current world champion making it back to back Spanish GP wins this season.

Kimi Raikkonen aims for podium in Bahrain

As Bahrain prepares for the return of F1 for the first time since 2010, Lotus-Renault driver Kimi Raikkonen believes he can score a podium for Lotus at the this weekends Bahrain Grand Prix.

Speaking last weekend at the Chinese Grand Prix where he finished a disappointing 14th despite qualifying 5th on the grid, the former World Champion said  “We had a lot of parts but it was wet on Friday morning and very cold in the afternoon, we went back to most of the old spec for Saturday as we knew how it worked. Qualifying was okay, but there was a bigger gap to pole which wasn’t what we wanted. We didn’t make the car faster which some others did with theirs. The E20 still feels good to drive, but we just need to get a little bit more speed. Hopefully we will find it in Bahrain.”

With track temperatures so high at the Sakhir circuit tyre management will be crucial. Let’s hope Lotus and Kimi can put together a better tyre strategy than last weekend.

Classic F1 – Mansell Versus Senna 1992 Monaco GP

To kick off the Classic F1 clips (from youtube of course!) we have this epic cat and mouse chase between Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna at the Monaco Grand Prix of 1992.

Mansell had been leading the race until lap 71 when he pitted for new tyres. Senna duly took the lead and for the remaining 7 laps of the 78, Senna had to fend off a quicker Nigel Mansell.

For me personally this is one of my fondest memories of F1 simply because it was the first ever race I watched as a wide eyed 13 year old kid.

Looking back now it was obvious that Mansell never stood a chance of getting past the McLaren Honda of Senna on the tight twisty streets of Monaco. Despite this it makes for compulsive viewing after all these years and shows what fierce competitors these two great drivers were.

Enjoy!
